Fabric Padding and Finishing Problems: Uneven Wet Pickup, Shade Variation, and Chemical Carryover

Uneven wet pickup, shade difference, chemical carryover, or a changed fabric hand often starts at a small difference in the padding section. The fabric may look acceptable at first, then the problem becomes clearer after drying or curing.

Start by checking the fabric right after the padding mangle. Look across the full width. Check the left edge, center, right edge, and both fabric faces. The first visible difference usually gives a better direction than the machine setting alone.

For padding and finishing, follow the finish path: bath condition, fabric absorbency, nip contact, roller surface, then drying response.

Check the Fabric Before the Dryer

Many padding problems are noticed after drying, because shade and residue become easier to see. The earlier check is more useful.

Take small samples from the same line position. Use fixed width points each time: left edge, left-middle, center, right-middle, and right edge. Keep the sample size and measuring method the same.

Record the sample position together with the wet pickup or add-on result. One average number can hide a left-right or edge-center difference.

Check the Liquor During Running

The bath can look normal before production and behave differently after the line runs for a while. Foam, fabric lint, oil, old deposits, poor mixing, and unstable replenishment can all change how the fabric takes the finish.

Watch the bath during production. Compare fresh liquor and used liquor if the problem becomes stronger later in the run. Check whether filtration, defoaming, tray cleaning, or liquor replacement improves the result.

Softener, resin, water-repellent finish, and mixed auxiliaries can make small bath changes more visible. A small change in wetting can later show as shade difference, uneven hand feel, or residue.

Fabric absorbency should be checked together with the bath. Dense woven fabric, knitted fabric, brushed fabric, open construction, and pre-treated fabric can carry finish differently. After a fabric lot, construction, or pre-treatment change, check the fabric response before changing the roller direction.

Compare Nip Contact Across the Width

One pressure setting can still give different contact across the fabric width. This is a common reason for uneven pickup, edge-center difference, and shade variation after padding.

Look for a width pattern. The same side may stay wetter. The center may carry more finish. A wider fabric may show a stronger difference than a narrow fabric. Pressure adjustment may change the problem immediately.

Check these points:

  • roller parallelism;
  • loading side;
  • cover wear;
  • surface glazing or tackiness;
  • swelling or hardness change;
  • roller bending under load;
  • fabric edge thickness or curling.

A pressure increase may reduce pickup, but it can also mark sensitive fabric or change shade after drying. A pressure decrease may protect the surface, but it can leave more liquor and increase carryover. Record what happens to pickup, shade, and residue after each adjustment.

Follow Chemical Carryover Back to the Contact Point

Chemical carryover usually leaves a trail. Find the first place where residue appears.

If residue is already on the fabric right after the padder, check pickup, foam, bath contamination, and nip contact. If residue appears after one roller or guide point, inspect that surface. If cleaning the roller helps for a short time, the surface is holding or carrying the finish.

A sticky, swollen, contaminated, glazed, or worn cover can change release. Small areas of build-up can also create local shade change or hand-feel difference. Check whether the residue returns to the same width position or the same roller position.

For positions where liquid or finish transfer affects the fabric, Transfer Rollers may be relevant.

Rubber direction should follow the real contact medium. For many water-based or humid textile finishing conditions, EPDM Rubber Rollers may be reviewed. When oil-containing softeners or oily auxiliaries are involved, NBR / Nitrile Rubber Rollers may be closer.

Surface finish, cover age, bonding, grinding, and chemical contact all affect how the cover behaves on the line.

Use Drying as a Comparison Point

Check the fabric right after padding and again after drying or curing.

If the fabric is already uneven before heat, stay with bath condition, fabric absorbency, and nip contact. If the fabric looks even before drying and changes after heat, check temperature profile, air flow, migration, and curing response.

Speed also changes the result. Higher speed reduces contact time in the bath. Foam and pressure difference can become more visible. Lower speed can increase pickup and change final hand feel. Record the fabric result after speed changes.

The goal is to find the starting point of the shade difference. Keep the stenter or curing review for a separate process check.

Keep Dewatering Separate

Padding and squeezing both use nip contact, but the production purpose is different.

Water removal after washing, rinsing, or squeezing belongs closer to Squeeze and Dewatering Rollers.

Fabric padding and finishing should stay with wet pickup, add-on, shade variation, finishing agent distribution, and chemical carryover.

What to Send for Roller Review

Send the information that shows the pattern:

  • fabric type, width, construction, and face/back difference;
  • bath condition: concentration, foam, contamination, cleaning history;
  • wet pickup or add-on measuring method;
  • sample positions across the width;
  • shade or residue location;
  • pressure setting if available;
  • changes after pressure, liquor, speed, or cleaning adjustment;
  • roller diameter, face length, hardness if known, cover age, and surface condition;
  • photos of the fabric problem and roller surface;
  • drying or curing condition if the issue appears after heat.

If the existing roller has worked well for a long time and the process has not changed much, drawings, dimensions, hardness, roller position, and photos may be enough to start a replacement direction.
