Fabric Squeezing and Dewatering Problems: Wet Bands, Uneven Moisture, and Pressure Stripes

Fabric squeezing looks simple when the line is running well. The fabric enters wet, passes through the squeeze nip, and the dryer receives a more stable load.

Problems start when the fabric leaves the nip with wet bands, one side stays heavier, the center dries differently from the edges, or pressure stripes appear on the surface. Operators may first notice it from the dryer: higher energy use, uneven drying, slower output, or a fabric feel that changes after squeezing.

At that point, do not rush to add pressure. More pressure may remove more water, but it can also make pressure stripes worse. A better first step is to read the pattern: where the moisture stays, whether the mark moves with the fabric, and whether the problem changes after pressure, speed, or cleaning adjustment.

Start from the pattern, not the setting

A squeeze section can look wrong for several reasons, but the visible pattern usually gives the first useful clue.

This is enough for the first screening. If the wet band moves with the fabric, the machine may not be the main problem. If the band stays in the same machine-side position through different rolls, the squeeze nip deserves closer attention.

When the fabric is holding the water

Not every wet band is a roller problem. Fabric can carry the problem into the nip.

A thick zone keeps more water. A dense structure releases water more slowly. A loose structure can collapse differently under pressure. Some knitted or nonwoven fabrics may look even before squeezing, but once compressed, one area gives up water faster than another.

Before changing roller pressure, compare the wet band area with the normal area. Look at the fabric before it reaches the squeeze nip. If possible, check moisture at three places: operator side, center, and drive side. Do the same after squeezing.

The useful question is simple: did the uneven moisture already exist before the nip, or did the nip create it?

If the fabric is the stronger lead, the next check is fabric width, thickness, absorbency, structure, and incoming moisture. For broader wet textile handling positions, see Textile Processing Rollers.

When the squeeze nip is making the profile uneven

Once the incoming fabric looks reasonably stable, the squeeze nip becomes the main place to check.

A good squeeze nip does not only press hard. It presses evenly. If pressure is high in one area and low in another, the fabric may leave with a dry band beside a wet band. If one end is loaded differently, one side may keep more moisture no matter how much total pressure is added.

This is where full-width pressure adjustment can mislead the operator. Adding pressure everywhere may improve the wet side slightly, but the good side may start showing pressure stripes or crush marks.

On wide fabric, roller bending under load can also show up as a center-edge difference. The roller may look normal when idle, but under pressure the contact line changes. Crown, parallelism, cover hardness, bearing condition, and mounting all become more relevant when the moisture pattern stays fixed across the width.

Pressure stripes are usually a contact warning

A pressure stripe is not just a moisture issue. It means the fabric surface has been marked by contact.

Sometimes the stripe looks like a dry band at first because that area has been squeezed harder. But if the surface is flattened, shiny, crushed, or marked, the problem has moved from moisture control into fabric damage risk.

Do not keep increasing pressure when stripes are already visible. Check where the stripe begins. If it appears right after the squeeze nip, stay around that nip. If the stripe repeats at a fixed distance, compare it with roller circumference. If it changes after remounting or bearing work, check runout and alignment before changing the cover material.

What the roller cover can change

The roller cover affects squeezing through touch, not only through hardness.

A cover that has become glazed may slide on wet fabric instead of holding a clean nip. A locally worn area may reduce pressure in one band. A swollen or softened cover may lose shape under load. A hard aged cover may remove water but mark the fabric more easily. Residue in the surface can also make the same band return after cleaning.

This is why copying the old roller is safe only when the old roller ran well and the line condition has not changed. If the old roller already had wet bands, pressure stripes, short life, swelling, or uneven wear, copying the same direction may copy the same problem.

Material choice should stay practical. For general wet and humid textile positions, EPDM Rubber Rollers are often one direction to review. Where load, wear, and contact stability matter more, Polyurethane Rubber Rollers may be checked. The final direction still depends on the liquid, fabric surface, pressure, cleaning method, and old roller behavior.

Speed and dryer load show whether squeezing is still doing its job

Speed is useful because it changes the time under pressure.

At higher speed, the fabric has less time to release water. If the whole fabric becomes wetter, the squeeze section may simply be short of expression time. If only one band becomes wetter, the issue is more likely cross-width pressure or fabric profile.

Dryer load gives another clue. If drying load rises after a speed increase, that may be expected. If drying load rises without a fabric or speed change, the squeeze nip may have lost efficiency. Look at cover surface, pressure balance, cleaning result, and recent mechanical work.

A simple way to run the next check

Do not change five things at once. One clean trial is more useful than several mixed adjustments.

Start with the fabric. Check whether the wet band exists before the nip. Then check the squeeze result at the same three width positions. After that, change only one condition: pressure, speed, cleaning, or roller mounting.

Keep the old setting as a reference. If the line improves, you need to know what actually helped. If nothing changes, you have also learned something: the main cause may be outside that adjustment.

For repeated problems, record only the useful items:

  • fabric type, width, thickness, and structure
  • incoming moisture and residual moisture after squeezing
  • wet band or stripe position
  • pressure setting if available
  • line speed and drying load
  • roller diameter, hardness if known, cover age, and surface condition
  • cleaning response
  • recent changes such as grinding, re-covering, bearing work, replacement, or remounting

Photos are often more useful than long descriptions. Take the wet band, the pressure stripe, both roller ends, and the roller surface before cleaning.
