If the glass is coated, follow the coating supplier’s cleaning instructions rather than scraping the mark to test it.

2. Find Where the Mark First Appears

The washer exit is often where a defect is discovered, although it may have started much earlier.

Compare the glass before washing, after the final rinse, after drying, and after unloading, wherever safe inspection is available.

If a scratch is already present before washing, examine the incoming glass and previous handling points. If cloudy streaks become visible after drying, check the rinse-water condition and drying section first. Minerals left by rinse water can become visible as the water evaporates.

The glass may also be cleaned successfully and then contaminated again.

Glass is a rigid sheet. Dirt, oil, or particles on a conveyor roll after the final rinse can transfer directly onto its cleaned surface. Drying and unloading rolls are worth inspecting when the marks first appear in those sections.

For example, if glass is clean after drying but develops an oily smudge after unloading, start with the unloading contact surfaces.

The affected face provides another useful clue. A mark confined to the underside directs attention to the lower contact path. A top-face mark calls for a check of upper contact points and possible contamination from above.

For a straight scratch, record its position across the glass width. A hard particle trapped at one fixed contact point may leave a continuous line as the glass moves past it.

3. Do the Repeat Marks Match a Roll’s Circumference?

A small patch of dirt on a rotating roll may touch the glass once per revolution. If the glass moves without significant slipping, the marks can appear at intervals close to the roll’s circumference.

Measure the distance between consecutive marks along the conveying direction. Compare it with the circumference of the rolls that contact the affected glass face.

Roll circumference ≈ 3.14 × outside diameter

For example, a roll with an actual outside diameter of 100 mm has a circumference of approximately 314 mm. Marks spaced around 314 mm apart make it worth checking.

Use the actual outside diameter if it is available. An old roll that has been worn or reground may differ from its original drawing.

Also check where the marks appear across the glass width. If they repeatedly follow the same path, look for a localized deposit or damaged patch at the corresponding position on the roll.

Two rolls may have similar diameters. In that case, the section where the marks first appear helps distinguish them.

A matching circumference is a useful clue, especially when the affected glass face and contact path also agree. Other rotating components can produce similar patterns, and slipping between the glass and roll can alter the spacing.

If several rolls remain possible, inspect their surfaces during a safely isolated maintenance inspection. Photograph any suspicious area clearly, including its position across the roll face.

4. What Should You Look for on the Suspected Roll?

Once the evidence points to a particular roll, examine its contact surface. Dirt, physical damage, and flat spots call for different corrective actions.

Dirt and Embedded Particles

Drying and unloading rolls can collect dust, oil, or other deposits from the surrounding environment. These contaminants may transfer onto glass that has already passed the final rinse.

Oil mist near the washer, for example, can settle inside the drying section and contaminate the roll surfaces.

If a deposit matches the position of the glass mark, clean the roll using the equipment-approved method and check the subsequent glass sheets.

When the mark disappears but returns shortly afterward, inspect the surrounding contamination source. Repeated cleaning will have limited value while fresh dirt continues reaching the roll.

Hard particles deserve particular attention. A glass chip trapped against the contact surface may scratch the passing sheet. Check the affected area for embedded particles and damage to the rubber covering.

Cuts and Gouges

Cuts or gouges on drying rolls can produce water streaks.

First, check whether the streak follows a consistent contact path. Then inspect the roll at the corresponding position.

If the rubber surface is damaged in the same area, cleaning may remove deposits, but the damaged contact surface remains.

A water streak that has no corresponding roll damage and varies with the rinse condition should keep the investigation directed toward water residue and drying.

Flat Spots from Excessive Upper-Roll Loading

Some glass washers use an upper pinch roll in contact with a lower rubber-covered conveyor roll.

If the upper roll applies excessive load to the lower roll, the rubber covering can develop flat spots. These flattened areas may leave marks, particularly on coated glass.

Inspect the lower roll for localized flattening and compare its position with the marks on the glass. Note whether the problem appeared after a change in the upper-roll contact arrangement.

A persistent flat spot requires attention beyond surface cleaning. Before replacing the damaged roll, the upper-roll loading should be checked against the machine manufacturer’s requirements.
