Pay attention to the edges, grooves, textured areas, and the transition between the rubber cover and the roll ends. Old coating or cleaner residue can remain there while the main face still looks clean.

Take one strip sample immediately before the first roll that touches the affected coating side and another immediately after it. Keep both samples from the same cross-web position. Samples taken several rolls farther downstream may already contain contamination from more than one contact point.

Record whether the roll touches:

the topcoat;

the backer coating;

or an uncoated metal surface.

Also record the strip temperature and any available cure, oven dwell, and cooling information. A coating may look dry at low contact load and still pick off when warm strip reaches a high-wrap roll.

Startup provides a useful comparison. Some lines remain clean for the first few minutes, then begin depositing coating after the strip and downstream roll section warm up. In other cases, one coil or coating batch produces deposits while another runs clean under the same roll contact. Those patterns should stay with the process and coating teams until the first change can be tied to one roller position.

The First Deposit Shows Where the Cycle Began

The first deposit may be no larger than a fingertip. It may appear as a narrow line near one edge or a thin colored film that is visible only under side light. Inspect it before it spreads.

A useful record is specific:

08:27 — first blue deposit on Roll B3, approximately 55 mm from the operator side, 19 minutes after reaching normal line speed.

“Roll became dirty quickly” cannot be compared with the next run.

Record the exact roll, time, color, cross-web position, contacted strip side, line speed, and whether the line was starting, accelerating, or running steadily.

Confirm that the material is coating rather than ordinary dust, oil, or cleaner residue.

Coating transfer usually leaves several matching signs:

the deposit color matches the topcoat or backer;

the residue forms a smear, skin, flake, or slightly tacky film;

it appears only where the coated side touches the roll;

the corresponding strip lane becomes dull, rough, thin, or visibly disturbed;

the same color returns in the same lane after cleaning.

Dust normally stays loose and powdery. Oil or cleaner residue often spreads into a transparent or darkened film when wiped. Coating residue usually has a clearer paint color and a more defined edge, skin, or smear.

Photograph the deposit before cleaning. Use the same angle and lighting during later checks. Side light often shows a thin film or raised edge that disappears under normal overhead lighting.

Build-Up Changes the Contact Before It Looks Severe

Once the first deposit forms, the strip is no longer running against the original roller surface. It is running over coating residue.

A soft or tacky layer can pull more coating from the strip. A hardened layer becomes a raised contact point. The local effective diameter increases slightly, concentrating contact in one narrow lane. Each revolution can then add more residue or rub the same area of coating.

Track the deposit by time:

first visible trace;

first clear increase in width;

first clear increase in thickness;

first strip mark;

cleaning time;

return time after restart.

The location across the roll face helps narrow the next comparison.

A narrow band can follow a local coating difference, polished roll area, scratch, or uneven cross-width contact. Edge build-up can follow edge temperature, strip shape, coating thickness, edge load, or cleaner residue. Full-face film points more strongly toward overall coating condition, residual strip heat, blocking tendency, or a widespread surface film. An isolated patch makes local damage, embedded residue, or incomplete cleaning worth checking.

Bridle rolls generate pulling force through wrap and surface contact. When the deposit begins at this position, compare the coating condition with the actual rodillo de tracción surface.

If the deposit appears mainly during acceleration, deceleration, or tension correction, compare the surrounding rodillos de control de tensión and the real strip path. The load during a speed transition may differ from steady running.

The Roll Eventually Marks the Strip

Fresh build-up often returns to the strip as a colored band, dark smear, paint-like particle, or local gloss change. Older build-up may harden and create a dull streak, polished line, fine scratch, or wider scuffed area.

Compare three details.

Color: Does the strip mark match the material on the roll?

Cross-web position: Do the deposit and the mark stay in the same lane?

Repeat distance: Does the mark interval correspond to the contaminated roll?

Roll circumference can be estimated as:

Roll diameter × 3.14

A roll with a diameter of 320 mm has a circumference of about 1,005 mm. Marks appearing roughly one metre apart make that roll worth checking. Slip, changing wrap, several deposits, or changing tension can disturb the interval, so the spacing remains supporting evidence.

At this stage, the contaminated bridle roll is behaving like an unintended rodillo de transferencia. It picks up coating in one part of the wrap and returns residue farther around the contact.

For broader adhesive, ink, film, or general residue problems, see Why Material Sticks to Rubber Rollers. The pattern here is narrower: post-cure coating leaves the strip, grows on a bridle or tension roll, and reaches the strip again.

Stop the Transfer at the First Change

Once the first deposit has been located, work on the condition that creates it. Keep each production trial controlled. Changing cure settings, speed, wrap, load, and cleaning method together may improve the result, but it will not show which change helped.

Cure and Cooling Stay with the Process Team

Compare the strip condition entering the bridle section:

strip temperature;

available cure and oven dwell records;

cooling condition;

topcoat or backer-side contact;

startup and steady production;

affected and normal coils or coating batches.

Use the time to the first deposit as the trial result. A useful change should clearly delay or prevent the deposit during a controlled run.

Wolorin does not set the cure schedule or diagnose coating chemistry. The roller becomes a practical review point when the strip reaches one position in acceptable condition and begins changing there.

Compare the Actual Contact at the First Roll

At the first deposit position, record:

the contacted strip side;

wrap path;

whether the roll is driven or idling;

line speed;

traction load;

tension during startup, acceleration, and steady running.

A high-wrap bridle roll places more contact length and traction demand on the coating than a lightly contacted guide roll. Warm coating may pass an earlier guide roll cleanly and begin transferring at the next loaded contact.

A controlled change in wrap, load, or operating sequence can show whether the first-deposit time or position moves. The trial still needs stable tension and safe strip transport. There is no single wrap, speed, or load setting that suits every coil coating line.

Clean the Roll Without Changing Its Working Surface

Cleaning is useful when the response is timed.

Registro:

whether the deposit was fully removed;

the cleaner and wiping material used;

whether the roll was warm or cool;

drying time;

surface feel after cleaning;

how long the roll stayed clean after restart;

whether the deposit returned in the same lane.

A long stable run after cleaning points toward old residue, cleaning interval, or shutdown cleaning. A quick return in the same position shows that fresh transfer is still taking place, or that the roll surface is holding residue too easily.

A stronger cleaner can remove paint faster and still leave the rubber cover in worse condition. Repeated exposure may change grip, gloss, hardness, swelling, or release. A roll that feels slightly tacky or looks unusually polished after cleaning has not returned to its original working surface.

When the Bridle Roll Deserves a Closer Review

A roller review becomes useful when the evidence repeatedly points to the same position:

the strip looks acceptable before the roll and changes after contact;

the first deposit returns in the same lane;

cleaning restores production only briefly;

the deposit returns faster as the roll becomes warm;

the problem began after replacement, grinding, or re-covering;

the cover looks glazed, tacky, swollen, softened, scratched, or unevenly worn;

the strip mark follows the roll circumference.

Inspect the full face under side light. Useful differences include cover material, hardness, surface finish, grinding condition, runout, crown, cleaning history, and time in service before build-up appeared.

Material names provide an early direction only. Rodillos de caucho NBR / nitrilo can be relevant where oil, selected cleaners, or general industrial liquid contact carries more weight. Rodillos de silicona sólida may enter the review for selected heated or release-sensitive positions.

A bridle roll still needs stable traction. A cover selected mainly for release can reduce grip or change tension behavior. Material direction, hardness, surface finish, cleaning compatibility, and contact duty need to work together.

If the previous roller ran well for a long time, a normal replacement can often begin with the existing drawing, dimensions, hardness, finish, roller position, and old roller photos.

If build-up continues after cleaning, grinding, re-covering, or replacement, compare the compound direction, bonding, cover condition, grinding, runout, crown, and surface finish more closely. Wolorin’s Control de calidad page covers related inspection points for dimensions, hardness, surface condition, and runout.

Keep One Timeline for the Next Run

Use one record for the oven exit, bridle section, cleaning work, and strip inspection.
